Peter Kenny Jones - The Football Historian on Instagram: "One of the most shocking injuries ever caught on camera. In August 1981, Ewald Lienen suffered a 25cm open wound to his thigh during a Bundesliga match against Werder Bremen after a challenge from Norbert Siegmann. Instead of going straight for treatment, Lienen — in visible shock — ran to the touchline to confront Werder manager Otto Rehhagel, believing the tackle was a result of instructions to “play more aggressively” against him momen

This is Ewald Lienen, and this moment from 1981 remains one of the most unsettling in football history. During a Bundesliga match against Werder Bremen, a late challenge from Norbert Siegmann ripped Lienen’s thigh open — a 25cm wound exposing muscle and bone. In shock, Lienen didn’t collapse. Instead, he ran to the touchline to confront Werder manager Otto Rehhagel, whom he believed had moments earlier instructed his player to target him aggressively. The wound required 23 stitches. Norbert Siegmann of Werder Bremen seriously injuring Ewald Lienen in 1981 with a high tackle that resulted in a deep wound of 10 inches, exposing his muscles and upper leg bone. Despite this, Lienen was completely consumed by rage, limped up, and went to the bench of Werder Bremen to express his anger at the tackle. The wound required 23 stitches, and after just 17 days, Lienen started training again. Tough as nails. | The Football Archive

During a match between Arminia Bielefeld and Werder Bremen, Lienen suffered one of the most horrific injuries ever caught on camera when a slide tackle from Norbert Siegmann literally sliced open his thigh, leaving a 25-centimeter deep wound. 😱 What makes this moment truly unforgettable isn't just the severity of the injury, but Lienen

🚨This incident took place on Boxing Day in 1981 during the Liverpool vs Manchester City match at Anfield. Manchester City goalkeeper Joe “Big Joe” Corrigan was hit on the head by a glass bottle of cheap white wine that was thrown from the crowd while he was inside the penalty area. He went down immediately and received treatment on the pitch, but thankfully the injury was not serious. The game continued afterwards, yet the moment caused strong criticism about crowd behaviour and raised concerns

𝐒𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝟑𝟒𝟒 𝐋𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒 on X: "The first half was just bat-shit crazy with the officiating man LMAO!! I've watched a lot of football in my life. I've never seen a phantom false start. How does that even happen? Two unfathomable taunting penalties. And an overturned touchdown that seemed inconclusive at best. Full credit to the Lions for winning this game. It's what great teams do. Not to mention overcoming a crazy amount of injuries." / X

Strivon on Instagram: "On 14 August 1981, Bundesliga fans witnessed one of the most shocking moments in football history. In an early-season clash between Arminia Bielefeld and Werder Bremen, midfielder Ewald Lienen was on the receiving end of a brutal challenge from Bremen’s Norbert Siegmann.
