An Alabama House committee has signed off on a bill that would make it a felony for medical examiners to remove a person’s organs without first notifying their family. The proposal, HB 71, sponsored by Rep. Chris England, would classify the practice as a Class C felony. That means medical examiners could face up to 10 years in prison and a $15,000 fine if they take organs without contacting a person’s next of kin.
