Jan 2, 2016 · I try to collect vinyl that only saw a release in that format for that reason, but I have made the mistake of grabbing a couple of albums that were already released on CD, and ripping those into FLAC 24 bit. I was about to make the grand mistake of collecting new albums on vinyl to rip it, though I think some light has been shed on that, thanks!

Apr 10, 2008 · I'll take the 100% CD FLAC rip any day...cleaner than the vinyl rip, and also over 3x smaller than 24 bit. People that hoard 24/96 vinyl rips are just obsessives that want their cake and eat it too. A nice lossless rip from pristine vinyl should more than suffice...unless you really like filling up hard drives with a lot of zeroes.

Would a loseless digital rip of vinyl sound exactly the same?
Jul 23, 2006 · Bear in mind that I'm all about the sound and not so much the aesthetics, collectibility and what not. While the notion of a record collection is somewhat appealing, if I can faithfully rip that more pleasing (to my ears anyway) vinyl sound to FLAC, then I'd rather spend that extra money on a better equipment setup.

May 16, 2023 · I try to only pursue the highest quality of CDs but for normal CDs, Archiving in FLAC is fine. Compressed FLAC can easily be uncompressed back to a WAV if needed. 99% use normal CDs, so everything in FLAC is fine. I'm a rare case. Also, full album WAV/FLAC may not work on foobar, etc. so you may need to extract to individual WAV/FLAC files.

Oct 27, 2010 · Look at a vinyl rip through a spectrum analyzer, there isn't much there above 16 KHz... this is why the rolled-off highs sound pleasing to some people. If the vinyl recording has a dynamic range of 13-15 dB and the CD version has 5-6, I'll rather listen to the vinyl.

Jan 13, 2009 · The FLAC encoder seems to choke on 24-bit files if I try to have it do ReplayGain, but seems to work otherwise up to 24/96. I use the simple FLAC frontend utility to encode vinyl rips and then fix the tags up with MP3tag. Edit: I just noticed that one of the uncompressed file formats is 16-bit flac.
