They're loud so employees can hear them and make sure you're not forgetting stuff and generally forced to pay attention. Annoying to you, maybe, but also helpful for you.

Savannah GA used to be filled with red roofed McDonald's except for one store built to fit the theme of a shopping center, one built after the red roof era, and one they painted the roof grey and took down the white stripes. Now every single one of them, except the shopping center one, has been remodeled. Even the newer built one wasn't spared.
