Henderson was unanimously elected moderator of the General Assembly in Glasgow in 1638 and was therefore at the forefront of church politics during the troubled reign of Charles I. Henderson was also responsible for drafting the Solemn League and Covenant in 1643.

In Caithness, Clan Henderson associated with Clan Gunn. In Glencoe, Clan Henderson forged a close alliance with the powerful Clan Mac Donald. A separate family grouping arose in Liddesdale and Ewesdale, being one of the smaller families of Border Reivers.

Perhaps the most famous member of this branch of Clan Henderson is Alexander Henderson (1583-1646), regarded as the leader of the Reformation in Scotland after John Knox. Born in Fife, he went to St. Andrews University, where he became a professor of philosophy in his 20’s.

Their reign put armed conflict over religion to rest for the most part and restored the Presbyterian Church, but, as we will recount later in our history on Clan Henderson, William instigated an action that led to an outrageous massacre of some of our Highland ancestors.

The Clan Henderson Society is committed to helping its members in their genealogical research, identifying both the individual families and connections between them, tracing their migrations from the homeland and connecting them to families who did not emigrate, finding DNA matches.

In modern times, Clan Henderson traces lineage through the Chief of the Name and Arms of Henderson, Alistair of Fordell. However, in times more distant Henderson’s can claim descent from a King of the Picts and down through five unique bloodlines evolving from the regions of Caithness, Fordell, Glencoe, Shetlands/Liddesdale and Ulster.

A day to celebrate and honor the various branches of the Clan Henderson: Shetlands/Liddesdale, Caithness, Glencoe, Fordell and Ulster. St. Andrews Day – November 30 St Andrew’s Day is the feast day of St. Andrew, the patron saint of Scotland.

The Clan Henderson tartan is predominately green with large blue and black bands, and small yellow and white stripes. The tartan is available in five variations: Ancient, Modern, Dress, Muted and Weathered.
