Oct 12, 2010 · Ai Weiwei's Sunflower Seeds is made up of millions of small works, each apparently identical, but actually unique. However realistic they may seem, these life-sized sunflower seed husks are in fact intricately hand-crafted in porcelain.

Kui Hua Zi (Sunflower Seeds) consists of more than 100 million tiny, handmade porcelain sunflower seeds, originally weighing in at 150 tons. They filled the enormous Turbine Hall at Tate Modern, an industrial building-turned-contemporary art space.

Ai Weiwei carpeted the Turbine Hall of the gallery with more than 100 million porcelain replicas of sunflower seeds. Ai had them made by Chinese artisans in the city of Jingdezhen, in northern Jiangxi, China.
