The most striking difference between the roundabout and the mounted jacket was the was roundabouts jackets had 9 buttons and were cut square at the waist, while mounted jackets had 12 buttons and were pointed in the front and back.

Aug 25, 2012 · It appears that the Columbus Depot may have supplied 263,000 jackets. Some apparently had blue collars and cuffs, while some had blue collar and untrimmed cuffs. It appears that artillery and cavalry may have received jackets with blue trim, and that red or yellow trimmed Columbus jackets may not have existed.

Jul 30, 2024 · Seems quite reasonable. One issue to consider is that uniforms fade so it is possible the gators were black but faded. At least one Confederate zouave unit has blue jackets that seem to have faded to brown. All speculation but I think you have come up with the best possible description based on available information.

Over my years of collecting, I often saw these tams listed as being members of Colonel/General John McArthur's 12th Illinois Infantry. I now Know better.

I wish I could tell ya'll for sure what the pants looked like but Unless there is a uniform in an attic somewhere are an as yet undiscovered photo, We may never know for sure.
