After an 18-month process, the FCC is now ready to start issuing package labels intended to let shoppers know that a smart device meets US cybersecurity standards.

The voluntary Cyber Trust Mark labeling program will allow consumers to assess the cybersecurity of IoT devices when making purchasing decisions

"IoT products can be susceptible to a range of security vulnerabilities," the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) said. "Under this program, qualifying consumer smart products that meet robust cybersecurity standards will bear a label—including a new ' U.S Cyber Trust Mark .'"

Now that the label is launched, companies are able to submit their products to be tested. Anne Neuberger, deputy national security advisor for cyber and emerging technologies, predicts that products with the Cyber Trust Mark will be on the shelves by the end of the year.

The U.S. will begin rolling out a program to label certain internet-connected products as meeting a basic cybersecurity standard.
