U.S. consumer confidence declined across all five components of the Consumer Confidence Index in September, resulting in the largest drop in more than three years.

"Slower job growth is starting to affect how confident consumers feel,” said Noah Yosif, chief economist at the American Staffing Association. “While the job market is still doing okay, fewer job openings, reduced hours, and slower payroll growth have lowered expectations for spending in the short term.”

Consumer confidence fell in September to a three-month low ahead of a pivotal U.S. election whose outcome could hinge on which presidential candidate voters think will do a better job on the economy.
