Mexico was raising sprawling tents on the U.S. border Wednesday as it braced for President Donald Trump to fulfill his pledge to reverse mass migration

Four tents are being erected in what’s known as El Punto in Ciudad Juárez across the border from El Paso to temporarily house Mexican migrants deported from the U.S. under the Trump administration.

Several migrants said they had recently arrived in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico after weeks of travel, only to find their CBP One appointments were cancelled.

"It's unprecedented," said Ciudad Juarez municipal official Enrique Licon as workers unloaded long metal bracings from tractor trailers parked in the large empty lot yards from the Rio Grande in order to build a tent city for deportees from the United States.

The Mexican government plans to establish 12 shelters and reception areas for deportees in northern Mexico over the coming weeks.

The US-Mexico border is effectively closed off to migrants seeking asylum in the United States within hours of President Donald Trump taking office, an extraordinary departure from previous protocols that has left many concerned migrants in limbo.

Hours after Trump’s inauguration, his administration canceled appointments allowing migrants to enter the U.S. to request asylum, leaving many of them stranded on the U.S.-Mexico border.
