Snow and ice had ground road travel at a halt in some places, and at least two people died in Texas. Many school districts had closed throughout a region unaccustomed to snow.

In particular, about 960 flights departing or bound for Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport were canceled. Dozens of flights were also canceled or delayed at Charleston International Airport (CHS).

A rare winter storm churned across the U.S. Gulf Coast on Tuesday (January 21), bringing heavy snow, ice and wind gusts to a region where flurries are unusual, while much of the United States remained in a deep freeze.
