The state Republican Party and conservative Minnesota Voters Alliance have asked the state Supreme Court to void Gov. Tim Walz’s decision to hold a special election Jan. 28 for a DFL-held House seat.

A lone seat could determine the balance of power in the Minnesota House. While a special election is currently scheduled for January 28 to fill that seat, Minnesota Republicans are suing over the timeline.

With control of the House at stake, the Minnesota GOP filed a petition in State Supreme Court seeking to change the timing of the Jan. 28 election.

Republicans argued Gov. Tim Walz called for a special election too early and asked for a halt ahead of the legislative session.
