A driver accused of severely injuring a woman in a hit-and-run in Minneapolis on New Year's Day confessed to the crime before turning himself into police, charges state.

A Twin Cities man has admitted to a northeast Minneapolis hit-and-run that seriously injured a woman early New Year's Day, according to a new criminal charge. Maurice L. Carter, 26, of St. Paul, with one count of criminal vehicular operation in connection with the incident, which happened around 2 a.m. Jan. 1 near University and Fourth avenues.

Police say the victim, later identified by family members as Michaela Howk, was walking home around 2 a.m. on New Year's Day when she was struck by a vehicle.
