MATAGORDA COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- Erosion caused by storms and Hurricane Beryl over the summer is blamed for forcing the closure of portion of access to Sargent Beach in Matagorda County.
In 2023, beach renourishment efforts in the county cost roughly $47 million. Damage from Hurricanes Ian and Nicole in the previous year exceeded $70 million.
She surveyed the beach Friday and found mild erosion. "I would estimate this to be maybe 18 inches, just under 2 feet. So nothing too major," she said, referring to a section of the beach.
Though the erosion continues to be a problem, Snider says his thoughts are with the Town of North Topsail Beach. “It’s gotta be tough seeing you beach disappearing,” said Snider.
The beaches are smaller and the water is getting closer to a lot of the houses and other structures. The erosion is also being scientifically measured with older aerial photos and drones.
