A rare winter storm across North Florida is causing historic snow in Pensacola and the Panhandle. See striking images of how residents reacted.

The snow that day had an icy reach as far south as Homestead Air Force Base — the farthest south snow has been recorded in the contiguous U.S. It spread west to Freeport on the island of Grand Bahama, which is the only instance of snow being observed in the history of the Bahamas, according to the Florida Climate Center.

Pensacola awoke to subfreezing temperatures for the second day in a row as a “significant winter storm” began to roll into the area.

Per Florida Highway Patrol, I-10 from mile marker 5 to mile marker 56 is CLOSED. The Barrancas Avenue Bayou Chico Bridge was closed in both directions at 4:58 p.m. because of ice, according the Florida Department of Transportation.

Florida just saw the most snow on record, with a preliminary 8.8 inches observed in Milton, which is north of Pensacola.

Snow totals in Louisiana have broken records. Parts of Florida, Texas and Georgia have also accumulated several inches of snow.

Pensacola isn’t out of the thick of it just yet. The National Weather Service extended its extreme cold warning for Northwest Florida from 9 p.m. Wednesday to 9 a.m. Thursday. Wednesday and Thursday are expected to be dry, which means we probably won’t see any new snow while temperatures continue to dip below freezing.
