Millions of people across the northern Gulf Coast braced Tuesday for a rare winter storm that's expected to scatter heavy snow, sleet and freezing rain around the Deep South as a blast of Arctic air plunges much of the eastern U.

Winter storms of this magnitude are rare along this 1,500-mile corridor, where winter storm warnings, watches and advisories are widespread. Travel will grind to a halt in the Deep South as snow accumulates in cities that don’t often use snowplows.

Gov. Jeff Landry declared a state of emergency Saturday in preparation for the winter weather expected to hit Louisiana early next week, when snow is expected to accumulate in some areas. The National Weather Service has issued extreme cold warnings for the state in effect from Monday through Thursday.

South Arkansas residents are bracing for an arctic air mass that will drop daytime highs to the freezing point, and overnight lows to around 20 through Tuesday.

A very rare winter weather event will pass through the Deep South beginning Monday night, and even down along the Gulf Coast on Tuesday. As an arctic front lifts north across the Gulf of Mexico, a low pressure system will intensify and track eastward and dump Gulf moisture into the cold air for the Gulf Coast states.

A deep freeze sets in Tuesday night where an Extreme Cold Warning is now in effect from Tuesday night through Wednesday morning where is could feel as cold as 7! The Northshore will drop into the 10s and the South Shore will bottom out mostly in the 20s. Some in the River and Bayou Parishes could drop to as cold as 18/19 or so.
