Sarasota law enforcement received more than 30 reports of victims of jury duty scams with losses exceeding $150K, U.S. Attorney Roger Handberg said.

Two suspected scammers have been indicted and arrested for what authorities are calling "a brazen scheme perpetrated by an inmate at a state prison with a cellphone."

Federal and local law enforcement join forces and bring charges against two people in a jury scam targeting Floridians. Florida Middle District U.S. Attorney Roger Handberg says one of the suspects allegedly ran the scam from a Georgia prison using a smuggled phone.

Sanders and Andrews face one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. If convicted, they each face a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison. Federal prosecutors also say the pair should forfeit $12,825, the alleged proceeds from the scam.

As if there aren't enough spam phone calls, the U.S. Department of Justice is now warning the public about a new scam. It happens like this: The caller spoofs a law enforcement number and tells the victim that they were summoned for jury duty and failed to appear,
