Increased volcanic activity in Greece’s famed tourist hotspot of Santorini has prompted the country’s civil protection minister to call a meeting with local and disaster response officials

Greek authorities have issued a warning to visitors to one of its most famous islands due to a surge in volcanic activity.

The crescent-shaped island of Santorini is one of Greece’s most popular tourist destinations, drawing visitors from across the world for its whitewashed houses and blue-domed churches clinging to the cliff edge of the flooded caldera.

Greece's civil protection minister has called a meeting with Santorini and disaster response officials following an increase in volcanic activity in the famous tourist hotspot.

Holidaymakers have been warned over flying out to the European Union holiday island in the spring or summer - amid a risk of a volcanic eruption.
