The South Korean government have said it will remove the concrete localizer structure that a Jeju Air Boeing 737-800 crashed into at Muan International Airport.

South Korea will extend runway safety areas and redesign infrastructure after the crash of a Jeju Air Co. flight last month that killed almost everyone on board, sparking criticism that the design of the airport might have exacerbated the accident.

The government on Wednesday announced a comprehensive plan to address potential risks associated with emergency landings at airports across the country following last month's deadly Jeju Air accident.

South Korean authorities said on Wednesday they will change the concrete barriers used for navigation at some airports across the country after the Jeju Air crash that left 179 people dead. South Korean and US investigators are still probing the cause of the crash,

The nation’s transport ministry reviewed structures near airport runways after the deadly crash of a Jeju Air flight late last month.

South Korea has extended the closure of the airport where a Jeju Air plane crashed last month until 19 January. A Boeing 737-800 ran off the runway and burst into flames after ramming an embankment at the Muan airport, killing all but two of the 181 people on board.

Seven airports will also have their runway safety areas adapted following a review of all South Korea's airports that was carried out after the crash - the deadliest in the country's history. The Jeju Air flight was bringing passengers home from Thailand after Christmas when it made an emergency landing at Muan airport and exploded after slamming into a concrete barrier at the end of the runway.
