Maggie Smith earned three Primetime Emmy awards for her role as Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham in all six seasons of the British period drama Downton Abbey. She also reprised her role in the two Downton Abbey films. The legendary actor died Friday at the age 89.

The world of movies also suffered a loss today, which was shared by Sister Act star, and comedy legend, Whoopi Goldberg. Posting to her personal Instagram with an image of herself and Smith in costume on the set of what some consider one of the best ‘90s movies, Goldberg had this to say:

Hugh Bonneville, 60, has paid tribute to Oscar-winning actress and Downton Abbey co-star Maggie Smith following her death aged 89. The pair starred opposite each in the ITV period drama as well as a series of feature-length films based on the franchise.
