The city of Pittsburgh and the Allegheny County Parks Department are both offering tree recycling services following the Christmas holiday.

The City of Pittsburgh has opened 11 collection locations for residents to deposit their trees so they’re not taken to landfills.

The city will open 11 drop-off locations from Dec. 26 to Jan. 26 as part of its annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program, which encourages residents to recycle their trees instead of putting them out on the curb, where they end up in the landfill.

Westmoreland County Cleanways and Recycling will accept Christmas trees at 14 drop-off sites. Each drop-off site has different operating dates and times. Trees must be bare of decorations when dropped off. Once dropped off, the trees will be chipped into mulch and used at community parks.

With the free program, Texas Disposal Systems and city of Austin turn living Christmas trees and other living decor into organic mulch and compost.
