The elephants are seen forming an ‘alert circle’ around their young while looking outward, seemingly for signs of any danger. After the earthquake the herd appeared to go back to normal but stayed closer together. The clip, like most, made its way to Reddit and people couldn’t believe what they were seeing.

Elephants at San Diego Zoo Safari Park formed an alert circle to protect their young as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake hit the region Monday morning.

The quake was felt from San Diego to Los Angeles, 120 miles away. It sent boulders tumbling onto rural roads in San Diego County and knocked items off store shelves in the tiny mountain town of Julian near the epicenter but caused no injuries or major damage. But it spooked the elephants.
