Lava fountains in Halemaumau crater ended at 5:22 p.m. today, bringing Episode 46 of the on-again, off-again Kilauea volcano eruption to a close. Hawaiian Volcano Observatory scientists said the lava fountains began at 8:17 a.m. inside the crater and continued for nine hours before stopping “abruptly.”

A group of 20 hikers walked past warnings and into the restricted crater zone of Mount Dukono on the morning of May 8, 2026. Minutes later, the Indonesian volcano erupted, sending an ash column roughly 10 kilometers into the sky and killing three members of the group.
