Three people are believed to have died after nine men became trapped in a coal mine in India’s north-eastern Assam state. Authorities told Reuters on Tuesday, Jan. 7, that rescuers had worked throughout the night to save the miners.

Three workers are confirmed dead in the Assam coal mine disaster. Efforts are on to rescue others trapped, with Army, NDRF, SDRF, and Navy divers involved in the operations.

Workers said over a dozen miners had been trapped after water from a nearby unused mine began to pour into the mine, with some miners managing to escape.

An official said that along with the Navy divers and other rescue teams, two water pumping machines have also been deployed to flush out the water.

Three miners are feared dead after a coal mine in the northeastern Indian state of Assam was flooded, trapping 12 workers inside. Rescue teams have located three bodies but have not yet been able to recover them, local authorities in Assam’s Dima Hasao district said on Tuesday.

Workers were inside the mine when water flooded it on Monday. T17 people have been rescued so far as per the reports. Nine people are still trapped inside the mine.

The workers went down the mine at around 9am on Monday; and officials are yet to ascertain the cause of the flooding despite the absence of any rain in the region.
