ASHEVILLE - Though information on school closures in Western North Carolina is still sparse, several schools and universities have now issued alerts in the wake of Tropical Storm Helene. Here's what we know so far from area educational institutions including WNC public school districts and colleges.

The Southeast grappled Sunday with rising death tolls, a lack of vital supplies in isolated, flood-stricken areas, and the widespread loss of homes and property while the devastating toll of Hurricane Helene became more clear and officials warned of a lengthy and difficult rebuild.

After making landfall in Florida on Thursday, Hurricane Helene continued north, bringing catastrophic flooding to western North Carolina and parts of South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. Asheville, N.C., saw approximately two feet of rain between Thursday and Saturday morning.

Residents in Hendersonville, N.C., toured their neighborhood in kayaks after Hurricane Helene flooded the area. The storm is expected to dissipate, but heavy rain and flash flooding remain threats for parts of the Appalachians.
