Cardinals in Vatican City failed again to elect a new pope, after two more inconclusive rounds of voting. Black smoke from the Sistine Chapel chimney signalled no decision, extending the secretive conclave process that began after Pope Francis’s death.

As cardinals gather at the Sistine Chapel to vote for a successor to Pope Francis, there is no single frontrunner, and it remains unclear whether the new pope will align with Francis’s more inclusive ideology.

Cardinals returned to the Sistine Chapel on Thursday to resume voting for a new pope and crowds flocked back to St. Peter's Square to await their decision.
