Turnpike officials say the increase still keeps the rate in the mid-range for toll prices, and most trips will see an increased cost of less than $1.

Tolls will also increase by 5% on Sunday, but that has been an annual event since 2007 when state law began requiring the Turnpike to help fund public transportation.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike will soon begin "open road tolling," which does away with manned toll booths in favor of regular overhead toll checkpoints that will either send drivers a bill via pay-by-plate technology,
