See how the New York wealthy lived back in the early 1800s when this part of town was actually called "the country" and it took 90 minutes by carriage to get downtown. Though the house has been move… Full review by BigMeesh30

As others have noted, it is FREE (both self-guided and guided).... it was not crowded when we visited in August, so there was little wait.... and if/when you wait, there is the little shop, the self-guided lower level and a short movie to see..... worth the visit, as it is the only home Hamilton ever owned..... we saw it on the same NYC trip when we also had tx to "Hamilton" on B'way.... my grandchildren (ages 15 & 16) and I enjoyed it very much! A couple of things to note: (1) there is no elevator so one has to navigate stairs (not difficult) to see the guided tour upstairs and (2) it is open Wed - Sunday only, closed Monday & Tuesday
Q:
What about parking near the Grange? Thanks!
A:
Don't know how close you could park to the Hrange. No parking onsite. We were staying in Times Square and took taxi. There is subway.

I would like to visit the Hamilton Grange National Memorial and the Morris Jumel Mansion in Upper Manhattan, but some friends have expressed concern about the safety of the surrounding neighborhood. I'm a 50+ woman and I usually travel alone. Also, this won't be my first trip to New York City; I'm comfortable with using public transportation and Uber, and I consider myself pretty streetwise. Any thoughts or observations from travelers who've been in the area?

You should have no worries whatsoever about the safety of the area. I can't speak to what it's like at night, but since the facility is closed by late afternoon, you would really have no reason to be there after dark. The area is remarkably safer than it was in years or decades past. -- you may find it a wonderful surprise to see how far Harlem has come along. In fact, after my visit I walked at least 10 blocks south with two other women to a French Bistro south for brunch. I highly recommend Maison Harlem for a post visit meal out. By the way, I thought bloody Mary's there rocked!
