This site tells the story of a small interracial band of “Freedom Riders” who challenged discriminatory laws requiring separation of the races in interstate travel. In May 1961, the attack by white segregationists began outside the greyhound bus depot. The bus would be attacked again and firebombed 6 miles down the road. Images of the attack appeared in hundreds of newspapers, shocking the American public and spurring the Federal Government to enforce desegregation in interstate travel.
