Siestra mountains are definitely worth exploring - some breath taking views. Santiago de Cuba for me personally, I preferred Havana and Trinidad and the places around. I too only had a couple of weeks but was on an organised tour which visited these places. If you are interested in the history and geology of Cuba then yes make the trip, but you do not need to stay long. We did fly back to Havana.
Q:
Do you have to pay a fee to tour it?
A:
Yes you can pay on entry if travelling yourself.
Q:
Is there renovations going on at the resort if so when would they be finished as im going there Feb 2015
A:
I visited it long time ago. So, I cannot tell wether there is a refurbish or not. But I can assure that conditions are OK.
